Arequipa – Colca Canyon

Arequipa is the second-largest city in Peru, situated in the southern part of the country in the Andes at an altitude of 2300 meters.  This beautiful city is known as the White City, because of its architecture made of white volcanic stone (sillar). It is surrounded by the volcanoes of Misti, Mount Chachani, and Pichu Pichu Peak.  The early inhabitants before the Incas relied on fishing, hunting, domesticated the llamas, and had many terraces for agriculture.  The historical city of Arequipa was declared a World Heritage UNESCO in 2000. Take a tour of the Plaza de Armas, Monasterio of Santa Catalina, and Juanita the Ice Maiden.

Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world, located 4 hours away from Arequipa.  The Colca Valley is a beautiful Andean valley that is pre-Incan, still inhabited by the Collagua and Cabana cultures. Visit Cruz del Condor for spectacular views of the condors flying over the Colca Canyon. Relax in  the Calera hot springs at Chivay, and soothe your body and mind.
